Academy 360 Reading Gladiators (comprising of 9 children) have won this months mini reading challenge against other Year 4 Gladiators across the country. The needed to read Floella Benjamin’s story ‘Coming to England’, then capture the main events and emotions in just 8 pictures with quotes. The story tells of Floella’s early life, beginning in Trinidad in an extremely happy environment then moving to England in search of a more prosperous future. As she moved to her new primary school in the 1960s, she was faced with prejudices for the colour of her skin, shattering all of her dreams of a great future. However, more determined than ever, Floella pushed herself through the difficult times, trying to survive. It was only when she performed at her school play , the other children realised how talented she was, she felt in her eyes, she was finally accepted as a person and not a ‘colour’.
The children chose a variety of paints and pastels to create their artwork, which was then photographed and organised into a powerpoint. The powerpoint was then set to music and we chose Will.I.am’s song “Good morning’ as the lyrics were most appropriate for Floella’s journey. The judges were also particularly moved by the ‘Sea of tears’ artwork by Maisie.
Floella Benjamin has congratulated the children through her Twitter account for their great achievement and we will receive a signed copy of the book by her.
A great achievement by all of the children – we are extremely proud of them and their continuous efforts.
